Aurorpaw had snuck out of camp at dusk, hunted along the way, and decided to visit her favorite wolf. She nosed her way around a tree, ferns brushing her nose, and stepped cautiously past the border and onto the Wolf Lands. A few moments more of padding through the forest, and the she-cat had come to their favorite meeting spot.
Kiba had promised to be there, but no life of any kind seemed be on the premises. She gave a sneeze as the strong scent of canine drifted to her, but it was faint.
She whipped back into focus as a shadow moved across the ground, but there was nothing to cause it. Aurorapaw crouched down to her stomach, low and wary and let a growl sound from her throat. Another shadow moved across the earth, but as the apprentice caught a glimpse of its shape, she was horrified to find that whatever it was, was large and had wings.
The screech of an eagle rang in her ears, and then the sound of something moving very fast. Slowly she turned her head to her in the direction of the noise. The sight of a huge eagle met her gaze, with outstretched talons aiming for her small frame.
Almost a split second later and she was airborne in the talons of a strange eagle. She struggled, twisted, turned, bit, and clawed, and after her many attempts to free herself, the raptor dropped her.
Aurorapaw’s eyes went as wide as saucers and she plummeted more the thirty feet to the ground, straight for a willow tree. She twisted her body in midair to land on all fours, but as her chest, chin, and flank came in contact with the branches of the willow, she was flipped upside down and approaching the ground fast.
One last intake of breath, a sickening crack that seemed to come from the very back of her mind, the screech of a frustrated eagle, and her world went black.
There she lay in the Wolf Lands, her body mangled and twisted at very unnatural angles, the talons of the eagle leaving their mark with huge gashes in her side, and a small trickle of blood spilling out of her parted jaws. Her eyes were clouded and turned toward the bleak sky with no emotion, no life.
I guess what they say is true, she really did risk her neck.[/size]
