Dragon's post: Sakura watched, for two weeks, in Ray's shadow. He grew slimmer, and she tried to say something about it, and now she climbed over the fence to talk to him. She had not seen him, but his sent hung in the air still, suspended in a trail that leaked out behind him. She inhaled his sent and started down the scratchy white pavement beneath her paws. A deep breath and she was off.
Seren's: It was as if he wasn't alone, as if something was trailing him. He spat on the sidewalk. There wasn't anything out there; they had lied to him. His mother when he had been a small kit had told him that there was a Protector, guiding them through their daily lives and keeping them safe and well and alive. Had It lost favor with Tammy? Or had It merely tried to punish him for not caring enough, for being fruitful and multiplying? A yowl rose up from his throat, his way of grimacing. It was just a tale, nothing more, a story of Lore that they told to little kits to get them to shut up for a while longer while Mommy and Daddy went off somewhere to argue with Daddy running off to a future mate and Mommy sporting a wonky eye for the rest of her life. He tried to remember if the poor she did eventually go blind. He sighed.

"Ray?" She asked, and no, he wasn't alone. He had her. Ray had Sakura if he needed help, but she knew that he wouldn't come to her when he did need it. Why had he taken this so hard? She was trailing him in a very odd way, in between stalker and friend, but not quite lover ether. She was almost worried to the point where she would start to loose weight over him.
"Ray?"

He nearly jumped from his frame. "Hello." Sakura looked awful, as if she'd been stricken with grief. Stupid. Of course she has. She witnessed the entire train of events. He wasn't ready to move on and completely forget the course of events, but it was definitely a start. He still had a lot of skeletons in his closet, things he'd rather not have anyone know, he realized. And how foolish, too! Heather--it was just fatal attraction. He wasn't in love with her, not like with Tammy. But that hadn't been exactly love in that sense, either. Sometimes he figured it would be easier if he went after toms.

"Oh, Ray, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you." She had almost jumped at his reaction, she had barely spoken above a whisper. "Are you alright? I know you and...some cats have pasts, but I mean, is it worth ALL OF THIS?" She moved her head around in a circle, her tail curving around the other way. Sometimes she thought that cats made drama just to have fun, but then, how was it fun when it hurt not only you, but everyone around you? That can't be worth the time of day.

He turned his stoical eye upon her. "You better just go, Sakura. Before I give you a heart attack, too." A flint lit up in his irises, magnified by some foreign emotion--raw vulneribility led to it, he was sure. He put himself out, dug himself back in, and spat up the bodies of his lovers. Revelations flooded his senses, and he felt himself whimpering pathetically. Stop blubbering, you masogynist! You get what you deserve. He would never feel for anyone again, let alone feel. It was too difficult, too much mess with little reward.
*******
Change was fast approaching; it was a new era for Marek. Enclosed by metal and plastic jaws, he hissed ferally, as if he could take the world head-on at any given opportunity. Maybe this city would be different; maybe he'd have a shot at it with a tom that actually gave a damn about his well-being and overall health, wouldn't abuse him. Spitting, he realized with distaste that he was frothing at the mouth. There would be hell to pay as soon as he was released from the Beast's Belly.

Sakura rushed to his side, light steps pushing her side against his. She licked his ear in an attempt to make him calm down, but her quick pannicky licks did nothing. "Ray, I doubt you could ever do such a thing. I think I've endured worse than a heart-ache."
And physically that was that was true. Almost every bone in her body had been broken, many veins and arteries popped, and many time she had thought she woudln't wake when the lights went dim. Sakura knew that Tammy had over reacted, and she also knew that she probably wouldn't. So it was all good.

Screeching filled his ears as the bigger beast that had swallowed the beast that had swallowed him came to a halt. Hissing, his ears flattened, attempting to block out the noise. Eyes bulging and watering by the time his people came to rescue him, it stung to blink. Golden-brown fur standing on end, his girl picked him up and hugged him, attempting to calm him. Spitting in rage and disgust, he fought the urge to claw her face off. How dare they trap the Almighty Marek?
Gazing furtively around, he locked sights on a she-cat and tom across the way meowing to each other about something desperately. The tom--handsome, he had to admit--looked as if he'd given up on life entirely while the she-cat seemed to be trying to cheer him up. He shook his head. When would they learn that a tom doesn't need or want a she-cat's love; according to Marek, it was another tom's love that they craved. Perching atop his girl's shoulder, he descended down and darted across the street to greet them.
*****
Wincing, he had forgotten about those incidents. Sakura had endured worse, and he could've kicked himself for not remembering that. Insert paws in mouth, he internally mumbled. A blur caught his eyes, and he panicked. Was he seeing things? No, he was certain that another tom-cat was making a bee-line for the two cats. "What the...?"
The mysterious cat stopped a nose-length away from Ray. Breathing heavily, Ray was surprised that such a fit-looking cat as this one would be panting after only running about--here he had to pause and count--forty pawsteps. "Erm...can we help you?" he muttered.
Rolling his eyes, Marek examined Ray closely. On second thought, he thought, wrinkling his nose, he really isn't as attractive up close as he is from a distance. At the two cats' confused expressions, he quickly remembered that he hadn't introduced himself. "I'm Marek. New to the neighborhood." It all came out as a kind of wannabe-macho-sounding grunt to his own ears, and he instantly wanted to curl up into a ball and die for his social faux-pas.

Sakura looked at the new tom who had rudely rushed into the conversation. It would be easy to mistake him for a lean, city-living cat, but if he was new to the neighboorhood, he would definatly be a house cat. He had a funny sent. It was feline, for sure, but it was strange. She didn't knwo what to make of him, so sat there and let the two toms talk.

Ray exchanged a glance with Sakura. She had kneeled down, not seeming to want to get involved. Sighing, he returned the newcomer's steady, unswaggering gaze. Pretty confident, he had to admit. Tilting his head to the side, there was something off about the silver-patched tom-cat. Shrugging, he put these thoughts on the backburners of his mind; he shouldn't be so close-minded! "And? What brings you here?"
Marek blinked. "Every cat's got to start off somewhere. Who knows when else I would've gotten to meet you two if not now?"
Fidgeting, Ray couldn't help but feel uncomfortable again. "Er...I think you'll find that the cats of this neighborhood come out a lot more often. We don't stay shut up in the nests for very long."

"That's true.." Sakura commented, observing the odd-ness that Ray had taken on with this tom. "There are a whole stack of cats around here just looking for...fun. They'll hear about you one way or the other and seek you out, don't worry." She tried to make her voice steady, but it had risen, not very high by the end of her sentence. Her ears flooded with heat. If Ray was standing right there, why on earth wasn't she standing next to him, talking to him, or...anything for that matter.
"I'm sure that you'll fit right in with our bunch." A new cat for Boo to annoy?

Bowing his head ceremoniously, he wondered just how mocking and sarcastic his behavior seemed. Eying the monsters of mankind on the pathways with scorn and a bit of unease, the tom-cat's ashen foundation of a pelt lined with stray silver patches seemed to drag down, useless rolls of fat. Shivering as a sudden gust of wind whirled by, he nearly jumped. "Cold out, isn't it?"
Ray's lips turned up. It had finally boiled down to smalltalk, pointlessly obvious observations, and an awkwardly dull exchange of pleasantries. "You'll get used to it. I'm Ray, by the way. And this is Sakura." What had he expected, though? Life only seems to set one up for disappointment sometimes.

Sakura gave a warm smile and bowed her head when her name was said. Quickly she tried to pick up the conversation that was dying. "I heard somewhere that if you move around more, you'll stay warm. Why don't we show him around, Ray?" Sakura asked with clear curiosity. Boo would have a field day with this new tom if all he did was sit around and make small talk.

Nodding, he wagged his tail, as if to say, "Lead the way." Ray quickly followed the eager she-cat, and Marek could only stare at them curiously. Everything was so tense and awkward. Sighing, he wondered if it would ever improve.

She was trying her hardest not to wail and blubber. It was a good thing that Marek was there, otherwise she would have. She wold have broken down right there, demanding why Ray was... out of it, to say the least. She wanted him to feel the same way, and to express it, not hide behind Tammy's accident. "Boo will be happy to meet you. She's been dying for someone new and exciting. I'll bet you'll get along quickly." Sakura mewed over her shoulder to the new tom.
And at the sound of her name, right on que, the small black-and-white cat jumped up the fence with excitement. Her eyes were wide with exasperation. Her mind raced as Sakura continued to talk, she started to bounce on the spot. A new cat in the area? This was perfect! The poor tom wouldn't even know what hit him, just that he got smacked super hard.

Marek raised a brow at this statement. "New and exciting"? Him? He doubted it. Padding onward, he braced himself for the presence of at least one more neighborhood cat. Who knew what this one would be like? Shaking his head, he knew in his heart that they were all crazy and that nothing could save him from this predicament.
Remaining silent the entire "voyage", Ray sneezed twice as pollen and grass filled his nostrils. Muttering profanities under his breath, he kept at his steady pace, tail unmoving and planted firmly between his two back legs. Sighing heavily all the way, he took no visible interest in Marek now. The stranger had already worn out his welcome in his eyes.
